Finally, The Hobbit comes to the big screen and I had the chance to see it on opening night. Where to start? Well, I’m a massive Tolkien fan so I’ve been beyond excited about The Hobbit since the credits rolled on The Return of the King 9 years ago. Of all the movies that we have looked at so far on, Army of Darkness is the funniest (if you have a sense of humour like mine) and perhaps has the least chance of actually being shown in a history class. “Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up! The year is 1215, King John has just signed the Magna Carta on the field of Runnymede and is busy pissing off the nation. “You’re no more the King than the boil on my ass!…what a tedious little man” ~ William d’Aubigny While the first film was mostly criticized for its divergences from the novel, in this second instalment they usually prove to be an improvement. This film covers much of the middle chapters of the novel – you get to see Beorn, giant spiders, barrels and, of course, Smaug. Peter Jackson continues his reinterpretation and lengthening of The Hobbit, giving us a more adult and darker version than how J.R.R.
